DIY FAMILY PHOTOS - SF FIT MOM - KELLY WESTOVER

They say it takes a village to raise a family, and they aren’t joking.
In this house, it also takes every family member to make a family photo shoot happen. We haven’t hired a photographer to do our shoots in 4 years and this was no exception. However, this year we didn’t have our handy bluetooth remote. So instead, we ‘used the village’ to make the shoot happen.

I love hearing all about family photo shoots and how the kids were running all over the place and no one was listening and somehow the photographer managed to snap the one moment that everyone was looking in the general direction of the camera and making some sort of happy face. These stories always have me rolling on the floor laughing, mostly because I can relate. That’s how ALL of our shoots have gone so far._MG_9683_2

While I set up the tripod and had big dreams of adorable bridge shots with everyone holding hands, I was hit with the ‘duh’ moment as my children scurried off to chase a squirrel and attempt to ‘rescue’ a cat who was on the wrong side of the fence. Duh Kelly, your kiddos are NOT going to fulfill your dreams today so just let those dreams go. If you live in today’s mom-siety of Pinterest parties and bento lunch boxes it’s not always an easy thing to let go of your dreams, but I stand before you right now to tell you that it is OK to just let them go. Let them fly high up in the sky and pop with a loud bang and come floating back down to earth in lovely, beautiful colored specks. Because even in a failed dream there is still beauty. Never forget that.

So, once I let go of the dream and finally freed myself up to just enjoy the moment we made some pretty awesome discoveries. Like this super rad concrete wall tucked away in a quiet area where the kiddos could run and play and scamper to their hearts content. And that, hot dang, if you give a kid a camera and a tripod they can do some pretty freaking amazing work. For example, all of the shots of the Hubs and I were taken by our littles. As was this family photo. Thank heaven for a timer and those fast running feet.

We made this photo shoot a real family affair and got everyone involved, which made it so much easier and so much more fun! The hubs even got a great shot of my mini & me. What do you think… does she look like me or not?
