Do I need more protein? - SF Fit Mom - Kelly Westover

Protein.
I see protein shakes, protein heavy diets and hear all about the importance of protein all over the place. It’s like the new sugar substitute. Protein. But, why? What’s with all the protein?

So here’s the truth you guys – the majority of us are way more nutrient deficient than we are protein deficient. Nutrients, those super important vitamins and minerals that our bodies get from eating leafy greens, veggies and fruits. Now those are worth talking about if you ask me. I’d much rather have a sweet peach, pear or a handful of carrots than a bowl of ice cream or a spoon full of peanut butter (protein). Don’t get me wrong, I totally had a bowl of ice cream this week, and it was amazing! This PMSing mama is still human after all.

But think about it with me… I mean, let’s not give ourselves a headache or anything…

but, some of the very first solid foods that we eat in life are pureed fruits and veggies. Right?
Chocked full of nutrients, vitamins and flavor. One of the last things we are given to eat are proteins. Even the scriptures tell us to ‘eat meat sparingly’. So…. deep thoughts aside, that means something to me, I don’t know about you.

I get it, I do. Protein is important, especially if you want to build big muscles and have quick workout recovery. And yes, protein will fill you up faster and keep you full longer. Absolutely, it will. I also know that protein isn’t always what my body is needing. It very often craves things like pesto when it needs more fat – which is good for brain development. Because I’ve taken the time to fuel my body it no longer craves the heavy fats and sugars like it used to, which not only makes my thighs happy by my wallet. I mean, carrots are way less expensive than ice cream. lol

So when I hear people ask me about my ‘Protein shake’ I honestly cringe a little bit. Sure, it has protein in it. But holy moly you guys, it is so much more than a protein shake. Take this line from one of my fave articles:

Shakeology is a very nutrient-dense shake that can be used for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You’d have to eat a whole lot of fruits and vegetables to equal the nutrition in a single glass of Shakeology—and you probably couldn’t do it for less than 170 calories. Shakeology makes it very easy to cut your calories without substantially cutting down your daily volume of nutrients needed. Truth be told, the majority of people are WAY MORE nutrient deficient, than they are protein deficient. So why just stop at a protein shake?

Yup. So much more than just a protein shake. A full meal, and almost all of my daily nutrient needs. Oh, and have I mentioned that it’s less than five dollars per shake? Yup. That just makes my busy-working-mama-of-three heart so happy. Because, let’s face it, where else are you going to get such a tasty full meal for less than five bucks?!
